In Memory of Bill

I remember Dad always speaking about this golf trip where he partnered with the late Dr Trevor Talma. Regardless of whatever was going on at that time of the year, they were going. When the Doc retired from the tour, I got the call asking if I would come as his partner. From day one I quickly realized why it was so very special to him. His two great friends Denis Roach and Roger Beale sharing a house for a week, and the only responsibility anyone had (besides doing the dishes), was to play 18 holes of golf with and against your friends for six days! I also quickly learned how very competitive he was, as well as solid a rock under pressure. But what he loved most, was how the tour developed over the years, old and new friends, younger or older, competing, then having loads of drinks, meals and laughs together. Even after he decided to call it quits, he was still insistent that I make all efforts to continue going on the tour. Obviously that didn’t take much convincing. Anyhow, I’m sure Dad, the Doc, Beale, Phillips and many more will be looking down on us to see how we are getting on. We will definitely raise a glass or two in their memory and honor.

On Tour as early as 2004 in Kiawah Island to his final tour in 2020, Bill was one of the elder statesmen of the Tour. Always a smile and a nice word, Bill was a true gentleman. We will miss him, but will continue to compete in this event with the sportsmanship and companionship he represented.

On behalf of all Tour members, young and old, from those who knew him well to those who never met him, Bill will always be part of this tour. We proudly place him in the list of Icons of the Tour.

May he rest in peace.
